The farm is surrounded by permanent pasture and we keep a small flock of Jacob sheep to help keep our pastures in good condition.
The Jacob Sheep Society was founded in 1969 to save and promote this unique sheep and has indeed done exactly that. Traditionally they were a parkland breed being such an attractive animal but nowadays are more widespread.
It is a hardy breed; alert, deep bodied and upstanding, with a white fleece with black patches. It’s head and neck are also black with a white blaze and either two or four horns are found on both the ewes and rams.
They make excellent mothers with plenty of milk, which is necessary as they regularly have twins or even triplets!
Although they produce a small carcass the meat is darker and slightly more ‘gamey’ than most lamb. They take longer to mature than many other breeds and for this reason we keep them for nearly a year and kill them as ‘Hoggets’. The meat is fairly lean, very tasty and extremely tender. Customers have often told us it is the best lamb they have ever eaten! |
